This machine I saved long during time I was studying from being trashed.
Machine at the time had 8mb ram and 540mb Quantum hard drive which had
Digital preinstalled MS-DOS 6.20 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11. First
I got memory to it, I managed to find 2x 32mb 72simm for cheap. Motherboard
got 4mb RAM built in. Later next step was to clone to Quantum hard drive,
because 90s hard drives were not very reliable compared to one made 2000
onward. For that I got 2gb Transcend CompactFlash and CF-IDE adapter. This
also made computer work faster and made backups easier. Last upgrade to
machine has been ethernet card.
Computer got pre installed MS-DOS 6.20 and Microsoft Windows for Workgroups 3.11. Operating system is Digital factory install with all accessories. Windows for Workgroups 3.11 got many benefits over Windows 3.1 or even Windows for workgroups 3.1: first of all network drivers are 386 mode and do not use almost 640kb memory at all. That was problem with Windows 3.1 and even 3.1 when using network software. Second you can get hard disks to run on 32bit mode which close to one in Windows 95. Third 3.11 for Workgroups got offical Microsoft TCP/IP support. That file can be downloaded from http://win31.de/esoft.htm where is also other useful Windows 3.x programs Stability wise Windows for Workgroups 3.11 is better than 3.1, but it
is still very unstable compared even to Windows 95 RTM, many programs even
386 mode uses conventional memory and GDI resources drain easily even if
you had lot of memory. Windows 95 you had more rarely resource problem
unless something actually filled all free memory.
MS-DOS: got lot of great games like DOOM or Indycar Racing 2, but I
wanted focus more on Windows 3.11 games and programs. First you should
install WinG, because many newer game uses it. Good examples from games
supporting Windows 3.11 are Microsoft Entertainment Pack games, for example
SkiFree. Also original (not gold) version of Civilisation II supports Windows
3.11.
Video playback is also possible, but you should keep in mind that 486DX2
with 1mb VLB videocard cant do same Pentium with high memory PCI video
card. Cinepack videos will play fine thouhg using Mediaplayer included
with Windows 3.11. I will attach video in screenshot and many other videos
that were available long ago in YLE and Nokia homepages to be downloads
end of this post, if you want something to play on Windows 3.11
Also web browsing is still possible in limited quanity using frogfind
and Wiby.me. Many simple sites (including mine) still exist on the internet.
