This machine has experienced many changes over the years. Machines origin
is from long ago when I was still studying. I saved it from getting trashed.
Originally machine had very tight chassis which permitted only half sized
ATX power supply and Seventeam power supply machine had suffered from swollen
capacitors. It was bit scary to run it but since I was broke student I
decided go with it will hold attitude and it lasted surprisingly long,
all way until I stopped using it when I found Pomi (Pohjanmaan Mikro Oy)
case that could fit regular ATX power supply. Later that case ended up
in my dad Windows 98 machine when I got myself Enlight case shown above.
Meaning was to get similar case that childhood Windows 98 machine and that
was great fit for it.
I have installed Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition for machine. I think that everyone shit on it for no reason. I have not severe stability problems, in fact even less than Windows 98SE with as long as I used Windows Millenium versions from the drivers. Most of stability problems were because Windows 98 WDM driver could be installed on Windows ME and many users and at worst some small OEM installed them instead of seperate Windows ME WDM drivers. Same problems exist even on other Windows versions, if you install older version of driver they may work but system may be unstable. Windows ME got many improvements for example native USB mass storage
support which is better option Windows 98 NUSB, WIA which is nice when
working with digital cameras compared to older Twain drivers and also system
restore which helps many times fix operating system you hosed with some
test. Whole Windows ME is shit one of those things everyone keep parroting
even though they never even touched it. Luckily today Microsoft has fixed
all problems and
Windows 10 or 11 do not have even worse problems. NT kernel by itself
more error proof, but you must release new versions of Windows all the
time instead of fixing problems on the current one.
On this computer I use Intel Application Accerelator which allows
i810 based motherboard to have software LBA48 support which mean you can
utilise hard drives bigger than 137gb at full capacity. I also installed
VIA usb 2.0 card for faster file transfer.
I have connected old Compaq Ipaq Pocket-PC into computer. on it I keep digital copies from notes and use 1gb memory card to use music player while I am having walk. Machine can also perform many tasks for example Putty latest w32old
version http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/0.83/w32old/
still supports Windows 9x so administration tasks are still possible. I
also write articles on my on same machine using old Netscape Composer and
I download them into the page using CoreFTP lite. Pictures I transfer trough
VIA from most digital cameras and old Photoshop is sufficent for editing
pictures.
Searching information from the internet and using email can be done
without problem using RetroZilla browser which now also
If you want search information on Windows 9x following search engines
still work without problem. Guulag used to work until last year, now it
is giving error about lack of javascript so here is few other options:
Multimedia and entertainment use Windows ME survives well: lot of older
software were developed back in day some which are still developed allows
do all kind of fun stuff. Omni+ which was in Saunalahti Serveri Internet
Access install CD is one example old and interesting program. It for example
includes dictonary, world clock, reciepe book etc. I prefer paper versions
from reciepe and dictornary books but it is fun to explore. Also there
is large amount of CD-rom based interactive encylopedias and other stuff.
Also video playback works well with ME. I like to use Windows Media
Player 6.4 with Combined Codec Pack and FFDshow. Both codec packs may me
downloaded from end of this article. Mplayer2.exe which is classic Windows
Media Player can still be found inside Windows Media Player folder. It
also better compability with codecs. For video codec is recommend Xvid
because it causes less cpu load than H264 and filesize is smaller than
with MPEG files. Xvid is not Divx, rather open source codec. You may convert
files using FFMPEG to Xvid format.. H264 is 50-50, some videos video and
audio are out of sync. For playing back DVD WinDVD is superior choice.
Remember to ensure DMA support is enable for DVD drive, also you should
enable it for the hard drive to reduce cpu workload.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000 is very good aviation simulator, Microsoft
Combat Flight simulator allows you to fly on World War 2 battles, In Half-Life
you play as Gordon Freeman you need clean up other people mess when assigment
you were given you and sounded like disaster from start goes wrong like
expected (happened in work many times, but so far never had portal opening
to other dimension). From 9x era racing games Viper Racing is best.
