| Lets make one thing clear from the start. Even though this article
is release 1.4.2025 this is NOT april fools joke, rather serious thing.
I feel that all satire I could do would be outclassed by people who actually
do things that way. Parody horizon been crossed long ago.
End of an era
Today when I opened my tv to check teletext, I noticed on YLE TV1 notification
that standard definition tv broadcasts have ended, I had forgotten whole
transition date. Other channels still works, but they will end soon too.
I tried if teletext would still function but it only gave blank page. I
should buy HD tuner to continue watching.

YLE TV1 notification

Will they repeat digital transition mess
When thinking about this transition I cant help myself from comparing
it to digital transition circa 2007/2008. Those who did not live during
that time, I can describe it: transition was half forced, and they refused
to bend on anything even from use of central converter and Yleisradio wanted
everyone to buy Digital Tuner to get full advantage of digital TV services.
What they meant by that was DVB-MHP based interactive (supertext, banking
etc.) televisionservices which were only available on high end Digital
Tuners and also they shut down whole service due to "technical failure
already in 2007. In reality nobody never used the whole service.
Also digital broadcasts suffered quality issues until 2010. On analog
broadcast inteference was show as blurriness on image when on digital tv
it was either psychedelic blocky mess or "weak signal" notification. Actually
biggest advantage that was left on digital tv over analog television was
digital program guide (EPG) intergrated into transpondersignal which meant
program guide could be checked directly from televisions. HD vs SD broadcasts
I don't see as notable benefit, 1920x1080 does not have notable advantage
on television broadcasts over 720x576 resolution. Biggest advantage from
HD resolution is on desktop use, or in some cases on simulator games requiring
details for example in car or airplane gauge cluster.
Also I think it's unfair that in 2013 Yleisradio decided stop charging
television licence from people with television sets and ethalibished YLE-tax
which is automatically taken from your income along with other taxes. I
understand that running television channel or online service is not free,
but why do you charge from those people too who do not use service at all.
Atleast bac kin television licence era only those who used paid. After
analog broadcasts ended, many terminated their TV licence as protest for
Yleisradio actions. However in begin of HD transition there is no such
option since you will pay tax whatever you used or didn't use the service.
transition supports cosumption culture and forced obsolence
Recently when I had my car radio on FM mode instead of tape I been hearing
same commercials over and over. Every time content been about "standard
definition broadcasts end soon, come to <insert store name here> and
buy new HD smart(less) television which has <insert useless services
here>. They wont even advertise HD tuners, rather want you to renew your
TV. I got JVC 32" CRT tv and Samsung 32" flatscreen tv and both been working
without issues until now. Why should I replace either one with disposable
technology, JVC is from 2003 and runs like new, Samsung is from 2009 and
still chugs like new. I don't need smart tv because I am still old enough
to model to have my brains to equipped with smart by default. Atleasty
ou will need HD tuner for tv/computer to watch tv and if you got old equipment
they are paperweights from this day onward.
|
These fully working devices (Hauppauge
PC tuner and Gigaset TV tuner are both
useless now thanks to HD transition.
However I don't intend to trash them
because I may find some use for them some day. |
Whole HD transition like shutting down GSM mobile network or forcing
EV to everyone is not about newer technology being superior to old one,
rather it is force to people buy new stuff. My oldest GSM phone is Nokia
2110 from 1994 and it still works just fine. Only had redo battery cell,
but its easy since battery can removed without heat gun, unlike in new
phones. I would like to see new iPhone or Android phone to function 31
years from just with battery replaced that can be done with fingers (expection
being some rugged phones like Ericcson r310i which uses screws instead
of opening clip).
Also would want to see Tesla other new electric car to chug along 35
years from here with odometer having number equal to going around earth
10 times like my Saab 900. Back in day they made mostly more reliable things
than today (there are expection of course like capacitor plagued devices
in early 2000) and since today everyone keeps making noise about climate
change why not start by first stopping mass consumption yourself and use
equipment and devices until they fall apart and after that start moralise
others.
What I am going to do now
Back when decision about shutting down Standard Definition broadcasts
was announced I swore that when my devices stop playing TV broadcasts I
would not buy new ones, rather stop watching tv entirely if they did not
change their plans. I really have not watched lot from TV in last years
aside from Teletext, because there is either programs I have zero interest
on or if good show too much commercial breaks to bother watching. Now when
broadcasts ended was time deliver promise. As can see from picture above,
I pulled out my recievers from JVC tv and Pentium 3 computer which led
me with empty SCART and PCI slot

Vacant connectors, unlimited possibilities
|
What I am going to do with vacant connectors? Nothing for now but was planning
getting some useful card for my computer, for example SATA control card
to be able to have over 137gb space per connector for Windows Millenium
Edition. Even though my pc only got 866Mhz CPU and 512mb ram with proper
software and attitude it is powerful workstation and can do lot. For television
was planning plug DVD player and watch some quality show from disc like
original Star Trek from 60s
Television really have not had lot to watch recently anyway so it's
kinda relieving that I got no supported one in my house, of course if get
HD tuner from somewhere I might plug it in for Teletext terminal (unless
they shut it down), but otherwise I dont care to bother.
As for site I shall keep break for blog and start finalise new about
page which has for example listed computers and mobile devices I own. Lot
new and thrilling content is coming.
Happy spring to all readers! |
